Whatever it is, compare to Emilio: Good Son/Bad Son.

Growing up in Hollywood is not for the feeble. It messed him up in way it didn't mess up Emilio (as far as we know).

Bought him a whore for Christmas when he was 9 years old.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | November 28, 2015 9:33 PM |
Maybe it's hereditary?
[quote]Everybody has seen some of the drug and alcohol-fueled public breakdown of actor Charlie Sheen, which lead to the loss of his lucrative job on the TV show Two and a Half Men, not to mention the esteem of many in Hollywood. What many people don’t know, however, is that he is not the only member of his family who has struggled with substance abuse. His father, award-winning actor Martin Sheen, also has a history with addiction, and has been sober for almost 25 years.
[quote]There was a time when Mr. Sheen was as notorious as his eldest son for his alcoholism.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[quote]“People take drugs because they have a very low self-esteem or they feel unloved, or life is so painful that they feel an effort to lessen the pain or heighten the excitement of life, because life on its own level does not seem worth living,” -Martin Sheen in an article from citzensvoice.com
[quote]But there was a time when Martin Sheen was an active alcoholic. During the filming of Apocalypse Now in the late 1970’s, Sheen was so sick he had a heart attack. Doctors told him it was brought on by his heavy drinking. He was only 36 years old at the time.
[quote]But of course, we as alcoholics know, this wasn’t enough to get Sheen to stop. It was getting re-involved with his Catholic faith, a long four years later that started his path to sobriety and socially-conscious living. He became a member of Alcoholics Anonymous at this time although he credits religion for getting him sober. Martin Sheen as anything but a respected member of the entertainment community, as well as political activist, and recovering alcoholic was left in the past.

If it's true that Martin paid to fix his son's mistakes (for example, "taking care of" the babies of girls impregnated by a teenage Charlie), then he deserves the lion's share of the blame.

They have four kids together and none of them turned out like Charlie. He's just a bad seed.

by Anonymous | reply 10 | November 28, 2015 9:50 PM |
Martin going religious could have compounded the problem. It happened to my cousins -- they could handle bad Dad, but not "good" Dad.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | November 28, 2015 9:52 PM |
He has made several 100 million dollars, has kids, ltrs, had lots of sex and parties, had lots of success and fame, doesn't sound like a bad life and he has achieved a lot and not really in a rip-off way.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | November 28, 2015 10:11 PM |
If he's gay then it's because Martin molested him or Sheen is a weak father and Sheen's mother is domineering.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | November 28, 2015 10:15 PM |
R12 makes a fair point, still it seems a shame that Charlie Sheen's become such a toxic disaster in the last few years.
I don't blame his parents. They were not absent or unloving or unconcerned with his behavior. Like a lot of parents they did their best and it wasn't enough for Charlie. Since becoming an adult, Charlie has been in a position to seek treatment and make his life better. He has tried rehab several times but he's never wanted it enough to stay sober. AIDS won't kill him but I expect that he'll kill himself within a few years.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | November 28, 2015 10:17 PM |
I beleive Martin. Sheen to be a decent man over 20 years I sat across from him on a NY subway . He was with his wife . They came across as very normal people. addiction is very very hard to overcome and especially for someone with access to unlimited income almost an insurmoutable problem .from what I have read about Martin he is a decent liberal leaning person. Charlie at this point has to want to get clean but I do not think he has the resources emotionally . I think he would have to leave Hwood and making mental health his priority. I for one will root for him.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | November 28, 2015 10:40 PM |
R15, that's a lot to infer about a person from a 10 minute subway ride.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 28, 2015 11:08 PM |
I doubt Martin Sheen ever educated Charlie about HIV and the use of condoms, he was too busy drinking.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 29, 2015 12:12 AM |
R17: There was no such thing as HIV when he was coming of age.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | November 29, 2015 12:34 AM |
I didn't infer " all that " from a ten minute ride . I had an impression of his and the rest has been formed from things I have read of him elsewhere.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | November 29, 2015 12:39 AM |
R18, how old do you think Charlie Sheen is? There was HIV when he was a teenager.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | November 29, 2015 12:40 AM |
You do realize OP that Charlie Sheen is a fifty year old man. Mama and Daddy's responsibility ended thirty two years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | November 29, 2015 12:42 AM |
not really r20 He would have been 18 in 1983. So technically he was an adult when AIDS became national discussion.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | November 29, 2015 12:44 AM |
He forced Charlie into the Mexican Closet - denying his Latino culture. This denial created an inequality for which poor Charlie had to self-medicate.
Poor Charlie.

Charlie lost his self-confidence when Jake Gyllenhaal beat him out for the bottom role in Brokeback Mountain.

Right. A confluence of genes within the individual or a different type of gene across different families with multiple generations of alcoholism in the family tree are the suspects.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | November 29, 2015 1:04 AM |
The answer to Charlie Sheen is so simple:
When everyone's fantasies are your reality, what do your fantasies become? Especially when you have all the money to act on them. When bedding the most beautiful women becomes a bore. When you're able to do anything you want with impunity. Not much different than what happened with Michael Jackson.

[quote] If it's true that Martin paid to fix his son's mistakes (for example, "taking care of" the babies of girls impregnated by a teenage Charlie), then he deserves the lion's share of the blame
He and was wife took care of Charlie's daughter Cassandra by raising her since Charlie and her mother were unable to do so.
Charlie is 50 with multiple kids and a grandkids, if he wanted to get clean he would have done it long ago. Blaming his parents is so tedious.I bet he held his family hostage with his bullshit behavior. Likely Renee and Ramon Estevez got little attention because the parents were too busy with Charlie's antics.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | November 29, 2015 1:15 AM |
Why can't that family pick one last name for everybody and stick with it? Sheen or Estevez - Pick One.
Yeah, a 50 year old - is a long way away from a 20 year old in terms of life experience. Charlie is still operating at the 20 year old age. Or 15 or 17 year old age. Charlie reminds me of Justin Bieber - in terms of lack of maturity and self-awareness.
Betcha Bieber will be another Charlie Sheen - give him time and he's well on his way.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 29, 2015 3:45 AM |
The Sheen/Estevez family is not Latino or Mexican. They are of Spanish descent.
I cannot imagine why anyone would take a parent's stage name rather than use their father's name.

[quote]I cannot imagine why anyone would take a parent's stage name rather than use their father's name
For brand recognition. Legally it's still Estevez. Juliette Rylance of Starz's the Knick uses her stepfather Mark Rylance's stage name--his real surname is Waters.

by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 29, 2015 5:42 AM |
The Sheens/Estevezes are Catholics. (Though Martin has said he's also been influenced by Buddhist teachings/philosophies. "Sheen" took the stage name after Bishop Fulton Sheen, who was a television presence in the 1950's.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | November 29, 2015 5:47 AM |
I appreciate that OPs question is tongue in cheek because when it comes to celebrities nothing is ever their fault. Even though he's a 50 year old man there are people blaming his parents. At what point are celebrities responsible for their own lives like the rest of us? If 50 yr old Brian from accounts had sunk into drugs, alcohol, had a history of beating his wives, barely saw his 5 kids and shacked up with girls half his age no one would be declaring "leave Brian alone, he's not so bad, this is probably all his dad's fault!"
by Anonymous | reply 36 | November 29, 2015 6:04 AM |
I think it's a combo of growing up in Malibu, son of celebrity and early quick success. Let's not forget, Charlie was in some pretty big films early in his career - good ones too.

Martin sheen is a wonderful man. Give it a rest with what did he do to him. ? Charlie has all he needs to get clean if he wants to . I don't think he is a bad guy just a victim of his drug abuse but he had all those kids are growing up without a father . Those two twins he had with the brook nut , I feel so bad for them

Another case is Robin Thicke - son of Alan. A real 'winner' that one too.
R31 Charlie Sheen does not look 'Jewish'. He looks like a high-strung, hard partying, mixed-up and selfish dude with zero self-awareness. And that's on good days.

R33, What exactly did Oliver Stone due to Charlie?
He was smart to take the Anglo-sounding "Sheen"as a last name. Very sad fact in Hollywood that you have to look like your name or lose a lot of auditions. Charlie does not look at all Spanish. (Note, that's one of the 1st things I was told on a set by a very kind but honest Academy Award winning director.)

Emilio Estevez and Laurence Fishburne were careening around Manila drinking and drugging and whoring at age 14. Emilio said he didn’t have a reputation for partying because he got it out of his system very young.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | November 25, 2019 10:26 AM |
I have no idea how Denise Richards put up with him. He brought a fucking prostitute to their home when their kids were there! And yet, somehow, she has ended up on good terms with him. She was fucking stunning when they got married and I'm sure the stress of being with him aged her, a lot. She definitely doesn't look as good as she used to.

by Anonymous | reply 62 | November 25, 2019 2:03 PM |
People who seem perfectly sane, nice, charming, etc... in public can be a nightmare behind doors with their kids. There was a gossip thread on here many years ago that said that Martin through huge parties (before he got sober) and it was implied that he let his friends take advantage of a young Charlie either knowingly or because he was too fucked up to notice or care. It's probably someone making up bullshit stories, but it's also plausible.

R63, that's why I always feel most uneasy with people who come off as "too nice". There is something really unsettling about it. Like, when they are behind closed doors, they probably have cut a few bitches, and beyond.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | November 25, 2019 2:38 PM |
Martin Sheen is pretty open about the havoc he caused when he drank. He wouldn't lay a finger on his kids to punish them, but when he was drunk he would smack them around. He stopped once Emilio was big enough to fight back.

I’m a friend of the family (actually friends with Martin’s first wife.) Our theory (my partner and myself) is that Charlie was left with Merv Griffin during his adolescence and Merv gave Charlie more than just lessons in showbiz. Charlie as a teen was very sexual, and we think Merv showed him lots of things in that world, either thru porn, blowjobs, masturbation, or more intimate acts. In fact, I am sure that an expose will come out soon about Merv and Charlie.
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 67 | November 25, 2019 3:15 PM |
R67, why do you guys think that? Was Merv reported to ever know or be around Charlie?
It’s not that I don’t believe you, but I’ve heard nothing of Griffin’s connection with that family, so have no clue...

Charlie grew up super wealthy, was never told 'no', was introduced to drugs and sex at a young age either by imitating his dad or people in the industry did this, and if what R67 wrote is true it would explain a lot of things.

Early in Charlie Sheen's career, he was on a talk show joking about how, as a teenager, he would dumpster dive for credit card receipts and use those to commit credit card fraud. Ha, ha, ha. I remember thinking what a creep he was, to have been some movie star's kid, and that not being enough. He was out ripping people off.
