Don Walsh, who has died aged 92, was an American oceanographer, submarine captain and explorer of some of the most inhospitable climates on Earth; most famously, in 1960, he and the Swiss scientist Jacques Piccard became the first humans to reach the deepest point in the sea. From 1958 to 1962, Walsh served as the US Navy’s first deep-sea submersible pilot, commander of the bathyscaphe Trieste. On January 23 1960 he accompanied Piccard in a dive into the Challenger Deep, the lowest point of the Marianas Trench, setting a record for the greatest depth ever attained by submarine, at 10,916 metres (35,840ft) below sea level.
